She needed balance. Her own moon that would rise and fall with her, keeping her equilibrium, loving her unconditionally.
I completed this book about three weeks ago but I was quite annoyed with how it ended and it put me in a book rot. I for some reason expected that the stories of the three ladies would somehow intertwine and be a blockbuster of some kind but unfortunately no.
My expectations on this book was quite on the high side and I have to blame bookstagram for this subtle influencing. However, now that I think about it, I ask myself, what do you think the story would be about based on the title (In every mirror she is black) and the synopsis?? Honestly, I was not sure but I was curious. Three black lives of different cultural backgrounds in a country (Sweden) with only one common factor - some rich bloke Von Ludin.
The book was written in parts and it explored the lives of these three women (Kemi, Muna and Brittney) as they navigated their lives from their home country to Sweden. And they are grappling stories. You really just want to know more about them. Also it explored racisim, immigration, being black in a foreign country, suicide, community, obsession and love. Quite interesting themes if I must say.
So let me break this review according to character
Brittany-Rae: Oh my this babe! This BABE!! The author described her to have model features and "smart" however I do not understand why she did not bother to - you know- think twice before opting to marry some oligarch in Sweden and move there. A whole Sweden!! Na wa for this love. And did I mention that she was in an actual relationship when she met this oligarch. My guess is the money but according to her it was love. lol. Her relationship felt highly unconvincing and the author did not make us understand her thought process in making those ludicrous life changing series of decisions.
Kemi: The boldened black professional woman who was labelled smart, intelligent and the best in her industry. She was poached all the way from the United States to Sweden but she could not figure out that the hiring was for optics reason. WHY? Still I enjoyed when she stood up for herself and displayed that no-nonsense attitude.
Muna: Oh Muna. The only story that gave me shivers and got some form of emotion for her regarding her survival situation. The author though painted Muna has a strong woman who stood up for herself and for those who she called sisters. SO tell me why she could not talk to Kemi who was also black like her?? She would stand up and talk to Yagiz (her boss) but not Kemi. WHY?
For the other characters:
Jonny: The write up on his characteristics in being somewhere on the spectrum without particularly saying it was really impressive
Ragnar was the most annoying of them all. Why did Kemi stoop so low. That pissed me off to a very large extent. Mschewww
Verdict
Honestly, it was OK.
