Kindle vs Print books: Which one is the best for you?

Writer's picture: OlayinkaOlayinka

Kindle vs Print books will always be a topic for the masses. If you come across this blog post, then it is probably because you are at a crossroad of either purchasing a Kindle or stick to hardcopy versions of books. You are probably thinking, is spending $150+ worth it? Do you know the number of books I could purchase with that amount? Whew..

Don't worry, I hope that by the time you are done with this post, you can make a more informed decision.

Kindle over Books.

Kindles are really slim. I currently own the Kindle paperwhite because I actually love the feel on my fingers and it is the cheapest of the lot.

  • It houses a lot of books. I think this is a really sad benefit for a book lover. We - highkey- wish those books in our e-library could appear on our shelves. I mean if someone walked into your house and saw shelf filled with books they go WOW. How do I get this same expression with my e-library??

  • Bye Bye to bulky books. It really goes without an explanation, that a Kindle is really portable and mobile.

  • No need for lights or lamps or candles. The light stays on and doesn't hurt your eyes. (referring to the paperwhite. I am not sure of the others)

Books over Kindle.

Yes Kindles are awesome but have you smelt the pages of a book??? It smells like money

  • Flipping pages of a book is irreplaceable. Doesn't matter the technology or the device, those flips are something. And what about getting to the end of a book; that last flip is like ......(let me stop here). We both know it is satisfying.

  • The SMELL.

  • No battery included. Books do not need to be charged.

Should I purchase a Kindle?

I was about to type a straight through YES, but then I realized I might be a tad bit biased with that. Yes, a kindle makes reading so much convenient and a lot more easier however with that price point, it can be quite intimidating. Purchasing a kindle doesn't come with books...you still have to purchase e-copies of books or subscribe for Kindle unlimited. So it can really be a hard sell.

HOWEVER..

As a hardcopy book lover and a two-time kindle owner (I misplaced my first kindle), purchasing a kindle has helped me improve my reading. I am a mom with an active little one who is quick to rip out pages or stain my books or perform some luxurious act on my books, so a kindle really helped break down that obstacle.

SO...

Have a heart to heart conversation with yourself using these prompts

  1. Why do I need a Kindle? If the answer to this is because everyone has it and it is cool then please keep your money in your wallet.

  2. Am I on the move a lot? If yes, what is my mode of transportation? Having a car makes it easier to carry real books as they can always sit comfortably anywhere in the car. Using public transportation can make carrying a book around a tad bit uncomfortable except you don't mind (a lot of us book lovers do not mind carrying ten books about. It has become a curse at this point lol)

  3. Do I love to travel? How often do I travel in a year? Books can be heavy and they can add a bit of kg to our already fully packed suitcase. It would make a lot of sense to have a lightweight e-book reader yeah?

  4. I am a mom. This goes without saying.

  5. I am a tech savy person and I want a Kindle. Period

STILL..

You do not have to purchase a kindle to read an e-book. Amazon allows you to read kindle books on any device (i.e. tablets, PCs, and phones) using the Kindle app which I think it is pretty cool. That way you enjoy the benefits of reading e-books without the Kindle device.

Happy decision making.
